IZMIR/EDIRNE, Turkey

Turkish security forces rounded up around 100 undocumented migrants across the country, security officials said on Monday.

In Turkey’s western province of Izmir, 59 foreigners were held off Papaz Cove in Urla district after Turkish security forces noticed that a boat in the Aegean Sea was attempting to reach Greece.

The migrants included women and children from Syria, Senegal, Mali, Eritrea, Angola, and Kongo, an official said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

They were later transferred to migration management authorities. During the operation, one alleged human trafficker was arrested.

In northwestern Edirne province, 22 undocumented Pakistani and Indian migrants were rounded up in a bus in Havsa district, near the Greek border, said another security official.

The group was planning to cross into Greece via Edirne.

In another operation in central Nigde province, a total of 18 undocumented migrants were held in a vehicle stopped in Ulukisla district of the province, according to the local governor's office.

In a statement, the Governor's Office said the migrants included a Kyrgyz national, who was arrested on charges of being a member of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, since especially the beginning of the civil war in Syria.
