A deputy of Turkey’s opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) was sentenced to more than eight years in prison on Thursday on various terrorism-related charges, according to a judicial source.

Abdullah Zeydan was sentenced to just over 8 years in prison by a court in the southeastern Gaziantep province.

Zeydan was convicted of membership in an armed terror group and spreading terrorist propaganda, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

The government has accused the HDP of having links to the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU.
