Canada pledges to 'help rebuild Ukraine when peace comes'

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Alberta, where the Canadian leader vowed to continue supporting Kyiv.

"We've provided support for the energy systems and beyond. We will provide more support. We provide support as colleagues, as allies, for Ukraine's path to joining NATO, Ukraine's path to joining the European Union, and most fundamentally, to the fundamental values of the territorial integrity of Ukraine," Carney told reporters as he welcomed Zelenskyy.

While the two leaders are set to participate in a signing ceremony, Carney pledged Ottawa's unwavering support for Ukraine.

"Ukrainians helped build this province, this country, and Canada will help rebuild Ukraine when peace comes," he said.

Zelenskyy acknowledged Canada's support.

"We are thankful that we have such strong partners as Canadians," he said.

"We're thankful for the energy support, also air defense. I know the decision. I'm so thankful. I will not spoil it now," he said, adding that the air defense package is "very important."

He also said that it "is crucial,” and that there is a “big deficit in the world."
