US Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office announced Sunday in a statement.
"Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke," said Allison Herwitt, chief of staff to the 53-year-old Connecticut lawmaker.
Herwitt noted that Murphy was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for ongoing medical observation and is "responding well to treatment." She added that physicians remain encouraged by his condition, confirming that the lawmaker is "awake and alert" while his team remains optimistic about a full recuperation.
Asked by reporters regarding the senator's medical condition, President Donald Trump expressed concern over the news.
"How bad is it? We don’t like to hear a thing like that. He’s a young guy. Nobody wants to have that," he told reporters.
Murphy has represented Connecticut in the US Senate since 2013, serving as a prominent member of the Democratic caucus.
