Turkey's benchmark stock index ends week flat

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Friday with a 14.74-point rise to reach 117,216.28 points, recording a 5.58 billion-Turkish-lira ($1.43 billion) trade volume.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index was flat, up only 0.01 percent compared with 117,201.54 points at Thursday's close. During the trading hours, the BIST 100 hovered between 116,829.39 points and 117,853.10 points.

On a daily basis, 38 stocks in the BIST 100 were up, 53 were down, and nine were flat compared with the previous close while the total market value of the listed shares in BIST 100 amounted to 735 billion Turkish liras ($189 billion) as of daily close.

The BIST banking index went down at close, falling 0.27 percent, while the BIST holding index closed the day up 0.80 percent. Among all sectors, the BIST leasing factoring index performed the best -- up 1.55 percent -- and the non-metal mineral products sector index saw the largest decline with a 0.98 percent drop.

Shares of conglomerate Bera Holding (BERA) were the top gainer with a 8.42 percent hike, while stocks of Anadolu Cam (ANACM), operating under one of the world's major glass manufacturers -- Turkey's Sisecam -- saw the biggest drop of the day, declining 3.27 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, automotive manufacturer Karsan, followed by iron and steel producer Kardemir plus state lender Halkbank.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate continued to rise, standing at 3.9110 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) on Friday, compared with 3.8980 liras at Thursday's close.

The EUR/TRY exchange rate, however, fell to 4.8060 by market close. One euro traded for 4.8110 liras at the previous close.

The BIST Gold Exchange index decreased by 0.25 percent while the price of gold per kilogram stood at 165,500 Turkish liras ($42,268) as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), versus 165,600 Turkish liras ($42,492) on Thursday.

As of 7.10 p.m. local time (1610GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $65.80 per barrel -- hovering between $64.89 per barrel and $66.20 per barrel during the day.
