At least two people were killed in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh after severe cyclonic storm Murasu struck the coastal region Tuesday, officials said.
Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said two people had died in incidents linked to the cyclone, which made landfall Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction across the state.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday after two cyclones hit the state within a week.
The latest cyclone struck days after Cyclone Arnab made landfall along India’s southern coast, killing at least five people.
“The CM explained the damage caused by the cyclones to the Prime Minister. He appealed to the central government to provide necessary assistance to the state, stating that significant losses had occurred across various sectors,” a statement issued by Naidu’s office said in a post on US social media platform X.
Separately, Naidu said Wednesday that he had conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in several districts battered by Cyclone Murasu.
He said several villages remained inundated, while roads had also been damaged by the cyclone.
