British premier, US president discuss Ukraine war, Middle East

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and US President Donald Trump on Monday spoke by phone about the latest in Middle East as well as the Ukraine war.

During the call, Burnham congratulated Trump on the latest US employment figures and noted the positive signs of growth within the UK’s own economy, his office said in a statement.

"The Prime Minister said the government was building more positivity about the UK and that he was making progress, but with more still to do," it added.

On Ukraine, the two leaders agreed on the need to continue working towards a ceasefire that prevents more loss of life.

Burnham also reiterated Britain’s support for Ukraine and for recent US-led peace negotiations.

Turning to the Middle East, Burnham set out the UK’s commitment to working towards peace and security in the region.

He also stressed the importance of a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and "ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon," according to the statement.
