Seven ministers from Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) stepped down after the party withdrew its political support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, triggering a cabinet shake-up, national media reported Thursday.
Broadcaster Antena 3 CNN reported that the resignations followed the party’s decision to end backing for Bolojan.
In a written statement, the PSD confirmed that the resignations were submitted Thursday at the Victoria Palace, the seat of government.
The party said the resignations “represent the political act through which the party’s decision to withdraw political support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was formalized.”
Despite withdrawing support from the government, the PSD indicated it would continue to play a role in the legislative process.
In the same statement, the party said that “until a new government is formed, it will provide parliamentary support for the adoption of the necessary legislative acts in order to continue projects funded by European sources.”
National media reported that efforts could now begin to form a minority government, while noting that the country is facing a new wave of political crisis.
The PSD announced on April 20 that it had decided to withdraw its political support for Prime Minister Bolojan.
Bolojan took office in June 2025 after winning a vote of confidence in parliament.
