Thousands without power after strong winds, heavy rain hit Ireland

About 18,000 homes and businesses across Ireland were without electricity Wednesday following strong winds and heavy rain.

Electricity provider ESB Networks said crews were working to restore power after adverse weather caused widespread disruption, particularly in the south and southwest of the country.

The company urged customers to continue checking its website for updates on power outages and restoration times.

Further heavy showers and thunderstorms were expected in parts of Munster, Ireland’s southern province.

Across the rest of the country, Wednesday was expected to bring a mix of sunny spells and showers, with conditions described as bright and fresh, according to national weather service Met Eireann.

Temperatures were forecast to reach between 14C and 18C (57F to 64F).

Authorities advised people in affected areas to take care while traveling and remain alert to further weather-related disruption.
