Fenerbahce settle for 1-1 draw with Roma despite strong 2nd half

Fenerbahce came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Roma in their Champions League opener Thursday in Istanbul.

The Turkish side created their first chances with Bartug Elmaz and Kerem Akturkoglu before Roma threatened in the 21st minute, when Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson denied Paulo Dybala from inside the penalty area.

Roma broke the deadlock in the 39th minute as Donyell Malen cut inside from the left and found Bryan Cristante, who fired a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Fenerbahce responded three minutes after halftime. Mason Greenwood threaded a pass into the penalty area for Archie Brown, who calmly lifted a left-footed finish above Mile Svilar to level.

The hosts pushed for a winner, with Svilar denying Vedat Muriqi in the 52nd minute before Greenwood fired into the side netting.

Fenerbahce came close again in the 72nd minute when Oguz Aydin was denied following a Greenwood pass, before Nathan Ake headed against the woodwork in the 87th minute.

Neither side found a winner as the points were shared.

PSV, Shakhtar share points

In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven also came from behind to draw 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk.

PSV created several first-half opportunities, with Ivan Perisic volleying narrowly before Kodai Sano tested goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

Shakhtar took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Isaque found Mendoza on the left before the midfielder cut inside and fired into the bottom corner.

PSV protested that Sergino Dest had been fouled in the build-up, but the goal stood following a VAR check.

Dest responded for PSV three minutes after the restart, converting Armando Obispo's pass with a right-footed finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

PSV nearly completed the turnaround moments later when Ruben van Bommel fired narrowly wide, while Shakhtar's Isaque was denied by goalkeeper Matej Kovar in the 67th minute as the match finished level.
